Walnut, Maple and Cherry Chessboard
Endgame
A chessboard of walnut and maple squares, framed by a wide cherry border with mitred corners and a bevelled edge.
Sixty-four squares have to line up perfectly, or the eye catches it immediately. Dark walnut and pale maple give strong contrast for play, and a few of the maple squares carry a hint of curl.
The wide cherry border is mitred at each corner and bevelled toward the outside edge. Cherry darkens with age, so the frame will deepen around the board over the years.
